Walmart takes step towards sustainability by transitioning to cardboard packaging

Walmart, one of the world’s largest retailers, has announced a significant shift towards cardboard packaging as part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability. The company aims to reduce waste and promote environmental consciousness by embracing cardboard as a more eco-friendly alternative for packaging its online orders.

In an effort to minimize the amount of cardboard used in shipping products to customers, Walmart is implementing right-sized packaging technology in approximately half of its fulfillment network. This innovative technology allows for custom-fitted packages tailored to the size of the customer’s order. By eliminating unused space in the boxes, this approach reduces the need for filler material by 60% and significantly decreases waste caused by oversized boxes, leading to a better unboxing experience for customers.

Furthermore, Walmart is empowering its online shoppers to request the consolidation of multiple items into fewer boxes. By reducing the number of shipments and optimizing the use of packaging materials, this initiative not only reduces waste but also streamlines the delivery process, enhancing efficiency and customer satisfaction.

By embracing cardboard as a packaging material, Walmart is taking a significant step towards reducing its environmental footprint. Cardboard is a renewable resource that can be easily recycled, making it a more sustainable choice compared to other packaging materials.

“Walmart is dedicated to fostering a more sustainable future, and our transition to cardboard packaging is an essential part of that commitment,” said Karisa Sprague, senior vice president of Fulfillment Network Operations at Walmart.
